This is the car Bentley hopes will double its production by 2025 and we were the first to drive it, not just at its international launch but 18 months earlier as part of the engineering team buried deep in the Middle East desert.


Spending a blisteringly hot day in the half finished, half disguised Bentley Bentayga prototype many miles away from prying eyes in the Middle East desert with the man responsible for its development, Board Member and Director of Engineering, Rolf Frech was a slightly intimidating experience.


Aside from being the fastest and most powerful SUV ever, the Bentayga is the most important Bentley since the 2003 launch of the Continental GT.


Temps touched 59degC and the prototype Bentayga was consistently bouncing off the 6000rpm rev-limiter as it hurtled over skyscraper-sized dunes in the middle of nowhere.


The 6-litre, twin-turbo W12 engine is 90 per cent new with a revised oil system that prevents surge and suction pumps that collect oil from the turbochargers when it’s on extreme angles.
